So You Want To Get A Boat?

3 Important Points

Ok, so you're thinking about getting a canal boat....perhaps you plan to live in it, or just use it in your free time? Maybe you're still toying with the idea and you're not quite sure if a Canal Boat is for you...with this in mind, we'd like to help you make an informed choice with regards to the lay-out – so we've come up with a few things to bear in mind....

Whether you've made up your mind or not, we've drawn up a list of things you might want to consider before you “take the plunge”.

  1. Be selfish. Design the interior to cater for you - and not for potential guests. Designing boats around friends and relatives is a pitfall to be avoided when these friends and relatives don't visit as much – for example, children do grow up!
  2. Many people come to us wanting the various rooms to be a particular size. For example, a 10 foot lounge, 6 foot bathroom, 7 foot galley etc – and leave storage space as an after-thought – when they should do the opposite and design the boat around storage space!
  3. You live on the boat – but you live in the lounge area. As a consequence make the galley, the bathroom and bedroom nothing more than functional. Do you really need to dance in the bathroom? Space should be allocated according to the time spent in each area (in the waking hours, of course!)

Life out on the canals is a fantastic, wonderful, adventure-filled living experience. You'll make new friends and see many beautiful sites...but just remember – it'll take some planning – but after a couple of months you'll be in your groove and you'll think you've always led this idyllic existence. See you on the water!
