The Evolution Of The Modern Canal Boat And Our Company

When Dursley & Hurst opened their doors for the first time 21 years ago in 1987, the Canal Boat industry was geared towards leisure and pleasure boating.

Adapting to a life on the canals...

In the years since D&H's first day of business, the design and manufacture of boats has changed dramatically as more and more people decided to live on the canals.
Consequently, Living rooms, bedrooms, toilets, showers, and all the necessities for a modern home were adapted and modified to fit inside Canal boats, with as much care and precision offered in the build as one would expect from any land-based home builder.

Today...

Today, the Canal boats that frequent the English canal system are highly sophisticated vessels that provide comfortable 21st century living conditions while they traverse the waterways that criss-cross the country.

Ability To Diagnose Problems...

As the change in Canal boats has progressed, Wigan-based Dursley & Hurst has been closely involved at every stage of it's evolution – and this is one of the reasons why we are not only regarded as experts in the manufacture and design of boats, but also as possessing an unrivalled practical knowledge of the day to day running of a “living” boat on the water. We are frequently called upon to assist non-customers who call us from the furthest reaches of the canal-network asking for a remedy to all manner of problems.

Telephone Diagnosis...

An example of this is their famous knack for diagnosing any problem by a simple description down the phone. “If somebody calls me and describes a problem, let's say, with the Canal Boat battery charging system” explains Co-Director Tony Martin, “I can tell them immediately what the problem is just by knowing the manufacturer of the various components”. “The same goes for the central heating systems used in all boats, or even the toilet”. With our dynamic mix of experience, technology and good old fashioned graft, Dursley & Hurst invite you to experience our unique brand of boat-building and our legendary customer service.
